Can I do Brain Gym from books? To a point. Books give descriptions of the Brain Gym movements and include sketches / photographs. However, having worked in many schools I find that people add their interpretation to the description provided and may not be implementing the programme accurately. Therefore after reading the books, it is useful to attend a workshop run by a fully qualified Brain Gym Instructor to learn:
The underlying principles and background to Brain Gym ®.
The finer detail points that make these movements more effective.
The coping strategies displayed by learners challenged by the movements.
Techniques to guide the learner towards developing the necessary connections to achieve the movements.
The application of the movements in the learning environment.
How can my nursery/school/authority receive training in Brain Gym®? The following are suggestions based on experience and feedback from teachers but if this outline is not one that works for you please contact us and we can design a programme for your learning environment. Start with the introductory workshops for all members of staff (or attend one of our modules in Glasgow) to give them a taster and experience of some Brain Gym ® movements and their application in the classroom. This can be done as:-
1 full day (with an optional half day follow up a month or 2 later)
or
2 half days with an interval of a month to allow staff to implement the first stage of the programme and review and develop their practise in the second session.
or
2 x 2 hr twilights with an interval of a month or more in between to integrate the first stage of the programme and build on it in the second session.
Some schools request a session with each class where the teacher can observe a Brain Gym ® Instructor working with children.
There after the suggested route is that one or two members attend the in-depth modules and the 4 day Brain Gym ® course for educators.
How can I ensure that my staff/authority are receiving effective training in Brain Gym®? It is very important that the Brain Gym® trainings are provided by a qualified Brain Gym Instructor who is fully accredited by Dr Paul Dennison (the originator of Brain Gym ®) to ensure that the practises are taught effectively according to Dr Dennison’s system. As you will see from the section (about Brainwise) I am a fully accredited instructor. I completed my training in 1997 and have been using Brain Gym every day since. As part of my CPD all instructors must update every 2 years and we are required to complete training each year to refresh our skills. The process of Accreditation takes about 3 years of training, case studies and a mentoring programme.
